Oftentimes when you first start making almond flour recipes, you’re not sure what to do with the rest of the bag of almond flour once you’ve made the one recipe. Well, lucky for you, I’ve rounded up over 20 delicious grain free recipes for paleo friendly treats.
Seriously, you’re going to get addicted to baking with it. Some of my favorite baked goods on are ones that use almond flour as the main ingredient. Below, I am sharing my favorite almond flour recipes that I make over and over again. These are some of our family’s favorite recipes!
In between the list of recipes you will find answers to questions I had when I first started baking with almond flour.
What is Almond Flour?
Almond flour is basically blanched almonds ground in a blender or food processor until a flour-like consistency. The only ingredient in almond flour is almonds.
It is flour made from ground almonds, which makes it perfect for grain-free baking and gluten-free baking!
Almond Flour vs Almond Meal
The main difference between almond flour and almond meal is the following:
- Almond flour is finely ground blanched almonds (no skins) and coarser in texture (although some bags are labeled super-fine almond flour).
- Almond meal is ground raw whole almonds (with the skins) and has a little bit of a nutty flavor.
Unfortunately, what makes it even more confusing is there doesn’t seem to be an industry standard differentiating between the two. Many brands will use the terms interchangeably.
Note: While you can make homemade almond flour, I personally find it’s easier to make your own almond meal and choose to buy a bag of almond flour. That way I don’t have to worry about getting the blanched almonds and not over-processing them when making your own almond flour.
Is almond flour healthy?
Almond flour has many health benefits. It is low-carb (great alternative if you are watching your net carbs), high in fiber and plant protein, and naturally gluten-free.
But I find the best part about almond flour is the high amount of healthy fats (specifically unsaturated fatty acids), which contributes to a moist and tender texture.
Where Can You Buy Almond Flour?
Because of the popularity of gluten-free baking, almond flour is more widely available now than ever before. My favorite brand of almond flour is Bob’s Red Mill which is available at large chain grocery stores like Whole Foods, Walmart, and Target, but you can easily purchase it online from Amazon.
Other top brands include Kirkland Almond Flour (look for almond flour at Costco) or Blue Diamond (Amazon).

What is the best way to store almond flour?
I store my almond flour in an airtight container in my pantry if I am going to use it within the next month or so.
But you can also freeze the bag of almond flour, especially if you know you will have it on hand for a while. Thaw to room temperature before making your recipe.
TIP: Since almond flour is more expensive than traditional flour, I like to buy it in bulk when it is on sale and store the extra bags in the freezer. Almond flour can be frozen up to 4 months.

FAQs
Here are additional answers to common questions if you are a beginner baking with almond flour:
What can I use almond flour for?
You can use almond flour in dessert recipes, including cakes, cookies, quick breads, and tarts.
Can I replace all-purpose flour with almond flour?
No, I do not recommend a 1:1 substitution with all purpose flour. Regular wheat flour contains gluten and creates an entirely different structure. Almond flour recipes typically need another egg (or flax egg) to bind the batter.
Is almond flour okay to eat raw?
Yes, it is. Almond flour and almond meal are made by grinding whole almonds. So it’s basically like eating almonds, just in powdered form.
Does almond flour spike blood sugar?
Almond flour will not spike your blood sugar as high as whole wheat flour because it contains twice as much protein, plus healthy fats, which can help balance your blood sugar.
