Matcha Benefits

Matcha is a traditional Japanese green tea, but different from green tea in that the leaves are harvested, stems and veins removed, and then processed into a fine powder, which is matcha.

Matcha also comes with many health benefits.

High in Antioxidants: Matcha is rich in catechins, which is a class of plant compounds in tea that act as natural antioxidants. And antioxidants help stabilize harmful free radicals, which are compounds that can damage cells and cause chronic disease. source.

Cancer Prevention: Matcha contains antioxidants called catechins, which are not found in other foods. The catechin found in green tea, EGCg (epigallocatechin gallate) provides cancer-fighting properties. EGCg and other catechins counteract the effects of dangerous free radicals coming from chemicals, radiation, UV rays, which can all lead to cell and DNA damage.

Aids* in Weight Loss: I don’t want this benefit to be held with too much high regard, but there is research shown that consuming matcha can help boost metabolism and burn fat.

Lowers LDL “Bad” Cholesterol: The catechin found in green tea, EGCg, also aids in lowering cholesterol levels. source.

A Delicious Spiced Matcha Latte Recipe

If you haven’t tried drinking matcha green tea yet, I hope you’ll give this drink a try! I personally love matcha lattes with a hint of maple syrup, but adding spices is a great way to bring additional flavor to this green tea latte.

If you love cozy spices, chai, pumpkin spice, etc., you will love this.

Ingredients needed

  • latte grade or ceremonial grade matcha green tea is going to give you the best flavor for this drink.
  • spices – ground cinnamon, ground turmeric, ground ginger are my favorite. But you could also add cardamom and cloves if you love chai.
  • boiled water – this will help ensure the matcha powder and spices get dissolved.
  • non-dairy milk & sweetener of choice – oat milk, soy milk or homemade cashew milk will be the creamiest. And maple syrup is usually my go-to.

How to make a spiced matcha latte

ingredients for spiced matcha latte in white bowls

Hot Water

You want boiling hot water to help dissolve the matcha and spices

Add Matcha + Spices

Traditionally you could use a bamboo whisk. I don’t have one myself but regular matcha drinkers swear by them.

A mini whipper whisk also works well.

Warm Milk

Then warm milk up and add the spiced matcha water to your mug of milk.

Combine

Whisk again and DRINK UP.

Or Make on Stovetop

Alternatively you could do this on the stove top and whisk all of the ingredients until mixture starts to simmer, then remove from stove and pour into mug.

Option to use a frother or blend matcha latte in NutriBullet before adding into mug.

Since I’ve gotten this milk frother, I’ve made everything in this from start to finish!

My dairy-free Spiced Matcha Latte is the perfect start to your morning, while the cinnamon, turmeric and ginger take this healthy green drink to a whole new level. Vegan and paleo friendly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 oz water, boiled
  • 1 tsp matcha powder, to taste
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp turmeric
  • 1/8 tsp ginger
  • 8 oz non-dairy milk, warmed
  • sweetener to taste

Instructions

  1. Boil water (on stove, in kettle, microwave) and add to small glass mixing cup. Add matcha powder, cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger to cup and whisk until combined.
  2. Warm non-dairy milk in large mug (I love this milk frother). Add spiced matcha water mixture to mug of milk and whisk again. Add sweetener to taste, and enjoy!

Notes

If really love match flavor, add a heaping teaspoon or so.

You may end up with bits of spices at the bottom of your cup if your liquids aren’t warm enough.

You can also make this on the stove top by putting all of the ingredients in one pot, and whisking until mixture is simmering. Then remove from heat and enjoy from mug.

I’ve also blended mixture in my NutriBullet. Just make sure milk isn’t too hot, then add directly to blender cup with slightly cooled spiced matcha mixture.

Feel free to double recipe.

I actually make this before bed because Matcha and turmeric have a calming effect on me. I also add black pepper because it helps turmeric absorption in order to benefit from it’s anti-inflammatory properties.

I tried this with a matcha Tea bag and just used a mesh strainer to get the tea leaves out. It’s what I had and I wanted to try it.

I’m curious about the nutrition facts. Where does the protein come from, especially 23 grams. Is that supposed to read 2.3???

    Hey!
I’ve heard that when you put the matcha powder into hot water, then it’s gonna be bitter. The optimal temperature is 80 C or 175 F.
    What do you think?
I love the idea of the different spices, though!! Can’t wait to try them tomorrow!
    Have a nice day!

I haven’t actually heard that but you can definitely adjust the temperature if you’d like!
