What is Ranch Dressing?
Ranch dressing is an American salad dressing traditionally made with buttermilk, garlic, onion, fresh dill, and other spices along with mayonnaise, blended into a creamy sauce.
Trust me when I say, this healthy ranch dressing is so much better than store-bought ranch dressings (I’m looking at you, Hidden Valley Ranch.)
Recipe Ingredients
This healthy homemade ranch dressing is made with a handful of ingredients easy to find at grocery stores. Here’s a look at the main ingredients:
- Greek yogurt – I used 2% plain Greek yogurt, but you can also use non-fat or full fat Greek yogurt or Skyr. You may need a but more milk to thin out the dressing if you use thicker full-fat or Skyr yogurt. If you would like to make this ranch dressing recipe vegan friendly, use a plant based yogurt like unsweetened coconut milk or soy yogurt. Note: For an ultra creamy ranch dressing, swap out half the yogurt for sour cream or add a touch of healthy vegetable oil, like avocado oil or olive oil.
- lemon juice – any creamy salad dressing needs a bit of acid. In this case we are using lemon juice, but you can swap it out for apple cider vinegar instead.
- stone ground mustard – stone ground mustard adds depth and helps the dressing emulsify. Dijon mustard is a good sub.
- dried herbs – you can’t have classic ranch flavor without dried dill and dried parsley. Feel free to use fresh herbs instead and / or fresh chives, too.
- garlic powder – a little bit of garlic elevates the garlic flavors we know as love.
- onion powder – this is the secret ingredient in an easy homemade ranch dressing.
- Kosher salt – to enhance all the flavors. A nice pinch of black pepper never hurt either.
- milk – milk helps thin it out to a dressing consistency. Skip it if you are serving it as a dip with your favorite veggies, or use a plant-based milk or water for vegan.

How to Make
Homemade Greek yogurt ranch dressing takes less than 5 minutes! Here’s how I like to do it:
Whisk All Ingredients
In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together Greek yogurt, lemon juice, mustard, dried dill, dried parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and milk until smooth.
OR, add all ingredients to deep cup or mason jar and use an immersion blender.
Taste Test
Taste test and add more salt, as needed.
If you would like a thinner consistency, add a couple more tablespoons of milk, 1 tablespoon at a time.

Use It As a Dressing or Dip
You can make this more of a Greek yogurt ranch dip recipe by omitting the milk. Talk about an easy recipe.
Some of our favorite ways to serve include:
- Drizzle it over this plant based Cobb Salad recipe
- Use it as a creamy dip for a vegetable tray full of carrots, celery, radish, tomatoes, and broccoli
- Prepare it as a dipping sauce for baked veggies, like roasted brussels sprouts or rainbow carrots

How to Store
Easy homemade yogurt ranch is best stored in an airtight container or mason jar in the fridge for up to 1 week.
The dressing will naturally thicken over time in the fridge. Feel free to add milk or water to bring it back to the right consistency.
