The Best Fall Latte At Home

Is it even fall without a pumpkin spice latte recipe?

I love a good coffee shop as much as the next Millenial, but making a special latte at home using your favorite mug always feels like an extra special treat. Plus, with this homemade pumpkin spice latte recipe, you get to customize it to your liking and save some money at the same time.

This dairy free friendly latte is made with simple ingredients, lightly sweetened with maple syrup and uses real pumpkin purée – no artificial flavors or weird ingredients. A much healthier version than traditional coffee shop version, since we’re using less sugar than what most coffee drinks typically include.

Ingredients for Pumpkin Spice Latte

We’re using some basic ingredients for this pumpkin latte, all of which you can find at your local grocery store.

  • strong coffee – You can brew some extra strong coffee or use espresso, depending on your coffee maker.
  • homemade pumpkin pie spice – You can use store bought but it’s really to make your own pumpkin pie spice, using just 4 ingredients: ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. Use my Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice recipe!
  • pumpkin – Make sure you’re getting canned pumpkin, and not pumpkin pie mix. You may notice Libby’s canned pumpkin is a deeper orange color compared to off-brands or even organic brands. Just in case you’re looking for that deep orange color, I’ve found the most consistency with Libby’s. A homemade pumpkin purée also works here.
  • maple syrup – For a lightly sweetened latte, a touch of maple syrup works great. You could also substitute agave nectar or honey.
  • vanilla extract – Always vanilla for a little floral sweetness. Feel free to sub in vanilla powder if you prefer.
  • non-dairy milk – My favorite dairy-free milk option is oat milk for it’s creaminess, but you could use almond milk, cashew milk, or coconut milk too. Hemp and soy milk also work! Whatever kind of milk you have on hand is fine. If dairy isn’t a concern, feel free to use whole milk for a creamy treat.

Find the full detailed instructions with measurements in the recipe card below, at the end of this post.

How to Make the Perfect PSL: 2 Ways

It’s easy to make a PSL once you have all of your ingredients on hand. For this latte recipe I’m sharing two different ways you can make it: hot or iced.

For a Hot latte

Once the weather cools off, there is nothing as good as sipping a warm latte. It’s a fall classic that makes you appreciate the change of the seasons a bit more.

All you have to do for this homemade deliciousness is:

  • Brew coffee to your liking (I prefer a little bit stronger for a homemade latte, unless you’re using a shot of espresso)
  • Warm milk (by stovetop, microwave or milk frother)
  • Add all ingredients to blender; blend until smooth.
  • Taste test for sweetness and spice, adding more if desired.
  • Add a little whipped cream for a special treat.

No Blender Options

If you don’t have a blender, you can add your hot cup of strong coffee, plus warmed milk, sweetener and pumpkin pie spice all to a large mug, and blend with an immersion blender or handheld frother. You just want some way to mix all the ingredients together to help the spices blend in.

For an Iced Latte

Sometimes you just have to have those fall flavors, but the weather is too warm or iced coffee is more your jam.

An iced pumpkin spice latte recipe is perfect and can also be easily made at home.

Here’s how do it:

  • Use cold brew coffee in place of hot coffee.
  • Add all ingredients to blender
  • OR add all ingredients to blender except milk, then pour coffee mixture over ice and add milk to taste.

Ideas for Using Leftover Pumpkin

Since this pumpkin spice latte recipe only calls for a couple of tablespoons of pumpkin, you’re left with a whole can that you don’t know what to do with. Well, I’ve included some recipes and ideas that are a great way to use up any leftover pumpkin.

Fall Baking Day

Take this as your cue to have a fall baking day and use one of the many pumpkin recipes on the blog like this pumpkin bundt cake, pumpkin muffins, or these PSL truffles.

Freeze Leftovers

Another option is to use ice cube trays to freeze the leftovers. Depending on the size of the tray, you will have one or two tablespoon pumpkin cubes that you can pull out of the freezer whenever you need your PSL fix!! You can also blend it into smoothies for some added nutrition.

Servings 1 latte

Ingredients

  • ½ cup strong coffee
  • ½ teaspoon homemade pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 tablespoons canned pumpkin, or pumpkin puree
  • 2-3 teaspoons pure maple syrup, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup your favorite non-dairy milk, oat, coconut milk, almond milk, soy, hemp, etc.

Instructions

Hot Version

  • Warm milk in saucepan over low heat until warm, or use microwave.
  • Add all ingredients to blender; blend until smooth.
  • Taste test for sweetness and spice, adding more if desired.

Iced Version

  • Use cold brewed coffee in place of hot coffee.
  • Add all ingredients to blender
  • Alternatively: add all ingredients to blender except milk, then pour coffee mixture over ice and add milk to taste.
★ Last step! If you make this, please leave a review letting us know how it was!

Recipe Notes:

TASTE TEST – Everyone’s taste buds are different so play around to adjust the sweetness and spice to your liking. You can also use pitted Medjool dates to sweeten like this Golden Milk Latte recipe.
MILK FROTHER METHOD – If you have a milk frother, another method to make the hot version would be to warm the milk up separately in a milk frother, and add the coffee, spices, pumpkin, syrup and vanilla to the blender until smooth. Then combine the milk and pumpkin coffee into your mug.
