Halloween Bark Ingredients

The great thing about this halloween chocolate bark is you can get creative! You can use google-y eyes, candy corn, different colored sprinkles, little halloween candies. You can go simple with sprinkles and eyes, add in some swirled white chocolate – so many possibilities!

Here’s what we used for this halloween bark recipe:

  • dark chocolate chips – choose your favorite! A quality brand of chocolate chips is recommended. Think Guittard, Ghirardelli for more conventional or Lily’s, Enjoy Life and Endangered Species for dietary friendly options.
  • pretzels – twists or sticks both work. Use gluten-free as needed.
  • halloween sprinkles – you can find halloween colored sprinkles (think green, orange, purple and black) at most grocery stores at the end of September or early October.
  • candy corn – a classic halloween candy. Some people love it, others hate it. But it does make for a great addition to Halloween bark.
  • googly eyes – look for these in the baking aisle of your grocery store.

How to Make Halloween Chocolate Bark

Chocolate bark is truly the easiest thing to make and I love how fun and festive this Halloween bark is. There are a variety of toppings you can use, but here’s how we made this:

  1. Melt the chocolate – I like to use the stovetop on low heat because it’s quicker than a double boiler. You can also use the microwave on half power for 20-30 seconds, stirring in between. Whichever method you use, just make sure you don’t burn it.
  2. Add melted chocolate to lined baking sheet – Using a quarter sheet pan is the perfect size for a 10 ounce bag of chocolate chips. Line the sheet pan with parchment paper or use a silicone mat so you can easily remove the chocolate. You’ll want to use a silicone spatula to spread the chocolate into an even layer, about 1/4″ thick.
  3. Now it’s time to add toppings! While the chocolate is still melted, start to add on the pretzels, candy corn, m&m candies, googly eyes and the Halloween sprinkles. Have fun with this and use whatever you’d like!
  4. Let it set – You can pop the baking sheet into the fridge to quickly set the chocolate, then use a large sharp knife to cut your chocolate bark into pieces.

Chocolate Bark Recipe Tips

  • Use High-Quality Chocolate – The quality of the chocolate makes a big difference in the taste of your bark. Use high-quality chocolate chips or baking chocolate for a smoother, richer flavor.
  • Work Quickly with Toppings – As soon as you spread the melted chocolate onto the baking sheet, start adding your toppings. The chocolate can set quickly, and you want to ensure that your toppings stick well. Press them lightly into the chocolate to help them adhere.
  • Get Creative – You can add in swirled melted white chocolate by adding 1/2 cup melted white chocolate chips. Use a toothpick to swirl, then add in your favorite Halloween-inspired toppings.

How to Store Halloween Bark

  • Room Temperature: Store the bark in an airtight container at room temperature in a cool, dry place. Avoid areas with direct sunlight or heat to prevent the chocolate from melting.
  • Refrigeration: If you live in a warm climate or want to extend the shelf life, you can store the bark in the refrigerator. Place it in an airtight container or wrap it tightly in plastic wrap to avoid moisture exposure.
  • Freezing: Chocolate bark can also be frozen for longer storage. Wrap individual pieces in wax paper or parchment paper, then place them in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. Make sure to remove as much air as possible from the bag to prevent freezer burn.

Recipe FAQs

How long does chocolate bark last?

At room temperature, chocolate bark can last up to two weeks when stored properly. If storing in the fridge, 3-4 weeks. If wrapped tightly and stored in a freezer-safe container, the chocolate bark should last 3 months.

How far in advance can I make chocolate bark?

If serving this chocolate bark for a party, I’d suggest making it 1-2 days in advance, and store properly so the pretzels don’t dry out.

Can I use milk chocolate for this recipe?

You can really use any kind of chocolate you’d like, just make sure you go for a high-quality chocolate, as it really affects the taste and overall recipe.
