WHAT. IS. UP? Guys, we made it through the first week of the new year! How is everyone doing?? Have you thought about any healthy changes you’d like to make for 2016?  For me, a healthy change I need to continue working on is giving myself some wiggle room when it comes to my diet. I used to put unnecessary stress on myself to always eat as healthy as I can. For example, I would go out to eat and feel like I couldn’t order what I really wanted (say, a pasta dish) because that wasn’t the healthiest choice on the menu. And while I do typically tend to order a hearty salad, it’s because honestly I just really love salads. But every so often if I wanted a burger or the pasta bowl, I’d tell myself I couldn’t have it. Which is just not true. So if you are struggling with food choices, because you’ve restricted your eating for so long, give yourself a break. You’re not any less healthy because you had a burger and fries. You’re human. ?

Okay, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s get to the point. We’re all here for some delicious smoothie bowls, yes? PERFECT. Because I’m back with some of my favorite blogging gals to share some ultimate healthy smoothie bowls with you all! Never had a smoothie bowl before? Well, no worries because we’re giving you six different bowls, so take your pic!

What did I bring to this party? A Cherry Berry Antioxidant Smoothie Bowl.

This bowl comes to you bursting with the perfect combination of cherries and strawberries, plus we’re throwing in a touch of blueberries, and 1/2 a small banana (which you can’t really taste, it is mostly for texture). And because I actually prefer my smoothies on the creamier side, I added a bit of cultured coconut milk I found at the store the other day (it was on sale, okay? I can’t pass up a good bargain).

And because we’re talking about antioxidants here, we’re also adding in turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon.

There is WAY too much crud going around this time of year, so I’ll take all the extra immune-boosting ingredients I can get at this point.

Cherry Berry Antioxidant Smoothie Bowl [Fit Mitten Kitchen]

Let’s run through just SOME of the great benefits of all the ingredients in this smoothie…

Strawberries: vitamin C, plus the “flavonoid quercetin, contained in strawberries, is a natural anti-inflammatory” (source)

Cherries: antioxidant protection, reduces inflammation, and supports healthy sleep. (source)

Bananas: potassium, magnesium, folate, and also a good source of vitamin C (source)

Blueberries: one of the most nutrient-dense berries (who knew?!) with vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, and they have a large antioxidant capacity. They’re also a great source of fiber! (source)

Turmeric: the main active ingredient is “curcumin”, a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. (source)

Ginger: another anti-inflammatory that also helps with nausea (source)

Cinnamon: also has anti-inflammatory properties and contains polyphenols, another antioxidant. (source)

So pretty much what I’m getting at is this smoothie is freaking awesome and filled with amazing, healthy, nutritient-dense foods that everyone needs in their systems. ?

Loaded with flavor and packed with nutrients, this Cherry Berry Antioxidant Smoothie Bowl will be your new favorite. Immune-boosting ingredients with turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger for an extra healthy kick!

  • Author: Ashley
  • Category: smoothie

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 small banana, frozen
  • 5 large tart red cherries, frozen
  • 4 large whole strawberries, frozen
  • 2 TBS blueberries, frozen
  • 2 TBS cultured coconut milk* (I used So Delicious)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened non-dairy milk* + more for desired consistency
  • Immune Booster
  • dash of ground turmeric
  • dash of ground cinnamon
  • dash of ground ginger (or 1/2 tsp freshly grated)
  • optional add ins:
  • spinach
  • favorite protein powder
  • favorite nut butter

Instructions

  1. Place all frozen fruit, yogurt, 1/4 cup of milk, and spices in NutriBullet or small food processor, and blend until smooth. (If your ingredients are having a hard time blending with just 1/4 cup of liquid, add more liqud about 1 TBS at a time, until it blends down but still has thick consistency)
  2. Pour smoothie into bowl and load up with desired toppings. I like chia seeds, hemp hearts, coconut flakes, nut butter, and/or granola.

Notes

*Yogurt is not necessary, I just prefer a creamier smoothie.
*The key to a thick smoothie bowl is using frozen fruit and just enough liquid for everything to come together.

This is EXACTLY what has been on my mind lately. Often times I find myself in this same situation at a resturant, feeling utterly lost. My New Year’s resolution this year is to order what I want, not what is the “healthiest.” Honestly, pasta and burgers are probably just as good for us as that salad as they fuel the soul, right? 😉

P.S. This smoothie bowl is the bomb.com and i cannot wait to try it!

Maddie, it’s so nice to hear that you can relate! I think sometimes when we define ourselves as a “healthy person” it can (for some) put unnecessary restrains on certain types of foods, which is definitely NOT good for the soul. Burgers and pasta can have a place in any balanced diet 😉 Thanks so much for stopping by. Reading your comment made my day. XO

This smoothie is the key to my heart. Cherries in smoothies is my kryptonite, and I live for ginger and tumeric. Love everything about this!

I think the only reason I drink mine is because I am often driving to work while consuming. Bowls are definitely fun though. Thanks for pinning Annmarie! 🙂
